Hackathon

Want to contribute to safer and more inclusive online spaces? Got skills in Natural Language Processing? Register for the hackathon which kicks off this year’s Latsis Symposium!

As a participant you will work in a small team and have access to a unique and original dataset of annotated reader comments from leading Swiss online newspapers to develop a hate speech detection algorithm.

Submitted solutions will be awarded—and there will also be additional goodies for all participants.

FAQs

When and where does the event take place?

The hackathon will take place at ETH’s Student Project House on September 6, 2023.

What is the team size?

Teams can have between 2-4 members.

Where can I sign up?

You can sign up on the external pageregistration platform of the Latsis Symposium.

Can we sign up as a team?

Yes – we encourage you to sign up as a team!

Can I sign up without a team?

Yes, you can sign up individually. However, we will then randomly form teams for all participants who signed up without a team.

How much will it cost?

Participation is free of charge. In addition, we will provide food, goodies and prizes for the best contributions.

Will there be food and beverages?

We will provide lunch bags and have a relaxed and informal lunch break. Happy to chat with you during the lunch break, but in case you are busy hacking – this is completely fine as well and we understand that. There will also be a small apero after the Hackathon concludes.

How will my solution be evaluated? Are there prizes and goodies?

Submitted solutions will run on a test set and the submissions with the highest F1-scores can win attractive prizes.

What kinds of NLP techniques and additional data are allowed in the hackathon?

You are allowed to use all NLP techniques and additional data you think is useful for this hackathon. Keep in mind that you only have one day to hack away, so you probably want to prioritize some ideas over others; furthermore it is unclear whether additional data (e.g., from German hate speech datasets) translates well to a Swiss context.

Will I have access to GPUs and have computing power?

Yes, we will provide access to GPUs and computing power.
